Spring 2021 Clinical and Student Teaching Plans in Response to COVID-19

CED 100, CED 150 and CED 200 Students
EKU-Richmond and Model Laboratory School are working collaboratively to provide opportunities for candidates to complete their 10 or 20 hours – either virtually, face-to-face, or through a combination of both forms of delivery. These experiences are being coordinated through conversations between EKU’s clinical educators (CE’s) and Model’s administrators. Because of the uncertainty associated with COVID-19, these arrangements are subject to change.
CED 300, 400, and 450 Students
EKU’s placement coordinators will assign each of the candidates in these courses to a hosting school/teacher. During COVID-19, the required 45 clinical hours for CED 300 and CED 400, as well as the 80 hours required** for CED 450, will most likely be completed in a virtual setting as most of our hosting districts are keeping the number of individuals allowed in the building to a minimum. Even when students are welcomed back into the buildings, our candidates will remain virtual. Clinical Educators (CE’s) will complete lesson observations and provide post-observation conferencing virtually as well. Conversations with our partnering districts have uncovered ways in which these changes in the delivery of clinical experiences during the pandemic can be optimal to both EKU candidates and P-12 schools.
The candidates should assist their hosting teacher with facilitating virtual instruction. This assistance can be grading papers, preparing online lessons, providing online tutoring, assisting with virtual breakout rooms, etc. To complete lesson observations/teaching, the candidates will work with their clinical educators (CE’s) and cooperating clinical educators (CCE’s). Some ideas for teaching lessons virtually include, but are not limited to, video recording the lesson or teaching the lesson live via Zoom.
Should any of the above plans for CED 100 - 450 need to be altered, the Professional Education Services office has provided the clinical educators with a list of approved alternative options that, upon completion, can be recorded as clinical hours in KFETS. Those options will be monitored by the CE’s assigned to that particular course. If a clinical educator wants to submit an additional alternative option for consideration, this can be done by emailing Dr. Diana Porter (email@example.com). Only preapproved options will be eligible for submission to KFETS for documentation of clinical hours.
CED 499 Student Teaching Candidates
Student Teaching placements will conclude on May 5, 2021. Student Teacher Candidates should support their Cooperating Teacher (CT) through this date, regardless of the number of student teaching days completed.
EKU’s Student Teaching /Certification Coordinator (Brandy Blackburn – firstname.lastname@example.org) will work in conjunction with the districts to create placement(s) for each of the candidates based upon their areas of certification. During COVID-19, the required 70 days** for CED 499 will most likely be completed in both a mix of virtual and physical classroom settings. University Supervisors (US’s) will complete lesson observations and provide post-observation conferencing virtually as our hosting districts are keeping the number of individuals allowed in the building to a minimum.
The candidates should assist their CT with all aspects of preparation and instruction as well as complete any professional development deemed important or required by their CT or hosting school/district. To complete lesson observations/teaching, the candidates will work with their US’s and CT’s to arrange these observations, which may include, but are not limited to, video recording the lesson or teaching the lesson live via Zoom.

Those options will be monitored by the US’s. Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Clinical Requirements
CED 810 students will be completing their 20 clinical hours for A term. Conversely, the CED 840 and CED 855 students should have completed about half of their clinical hours as well one of their observations by midterm. MAT students should be in contact with their hosting teachers (CCE) and providing either online or in person support to these teachers through any of the following activities:
- Assisting teacher in lesson delivery/instruction
- Preparing instructional resources/lessons materials for classroom teacher
- Tutoring or leading small groups of students for the teacher
- Teaching lessons
- Participating in virtual meetings with teacher(s)
- Providing support to school staff in Family Resource and Youth Services Center
- Watching SBDM meeting
- Watching School Board meeting
- Completing training required of assigned teacher
- Completing training as directed by assigned teacher for the purposes of classroom instruction
- Virtual meeting with clinical educator
- Attending professional development which teacher is required to participate
- Providing academic tutoring or student support through local organizations (ex. YMCA)
For lesson observations/teaching: Work with your CCE and CE to complete these lessons by writing a lesson plan and either video recording your lesson or teaching it live via Zoom for your CE or CCE to observe and evaluate. After the lesson observation, complete a virtual debriefing with your CE or CCE. This debriefing time should be documented as part of your clinical hours.
Document these clinical hours in KFETS as well as submit a request for observations, final evaluation and self-evaluation in Taskstream to your clinical educator.
MAT Students Teaching with Temporary Provisional Certification
As you are aware, you are not required to document clinical hours in KFETS as EPSB allows your job teaching to count toward that requirement. You still must complete lesson observations and should discuss the best mode for completing these (i.e. in person, Zoom, recorded).
The format for the Spring 2021 graduation/commencement ceremony is currently to be determined. However, all eligible candidates will graduate and receive diplomas. Diplomas usually arrive in the mail a few weeks after the conclusion of the final semester. Please note that successful completion of student teaching, as well as any other outstanding course work, is still a requirement for graduation. Your EPSB application for teaching certification cannot be processed until EKU’s grades are processed through the Registrar’s office, which usually occurs during the few weeks following graduation.
