Alternative Certification
An innovative approach for entry into the education profession at Eastern Kentucky University was created in 2001 in response to the nationwide need for teachers and other school professionals.
Alternative Routes to Certification at Eastern Kentucky University is a unique graduate-level program that certifies qualified individuals for education positions in Kentucky schools. Eastern Kentucky University supports the admission of students who have demonstrated exceptional and outstanding performance, originally trained outside the field of education, in their pursuit of education-related degrees and certification programs.
We currently offer certification in the following areas: educational leadership, interdisciplinary early childhood education (I.E.C.E.), secondary, and middle grade teaching. Please visit all our links to explore opportunities available at this time.

Masters of Arts in Teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching is a degree program designed to help individuals holding non-teaching baccalaureate degrees in appropriate fields acquire teacher certification for interdisciplinary early childhood education (IECE), middle grade, secondary, or P-12 levels. In addition to meeting the general admission criteria for graduate study, applicants for each option must meet the requirements for the specific program prior to initial enrollment in the program.
Application for the M.A.T. program does not guarantee admission into the program. Program candidates are selected based upon their qualifications.
